A mystery short story writing competition for young adults
How do you enter? Students should submit two copies of an original mystery story to Youth Services, Chicago Ridge Public Library. In the heading, each student should print his/her name, full home address, home telephone number, grade, and school.
Rules:
* Word limit: 1000
* Category: mystery, suspense, crime
* Age limit: 6th to 12th grade
* Manuscript: must be typed; double spaced
* Deadline: October 24, 2003 It is important that writers respect deadlines. Therefore, no late entries will be accepted.
All Participants will receive a certificate from Mystery Writers of America. The tops three stories will receive a mystery book autographed by the author.
Be sure to keep a copy of your story yourself!

Our programs are designed for intellectual stimulation, increasing public awareness of recent advances in various academic disciplines and to showcase the exceptional quality of our academic enterprises. These activities are aimed at high school students, their families and teachers.

Get ready for family fun with an academic twist! Our annual general knowledge contest, in game show format, is for high school teams composed of three students and three of their parents/guardians. Up to two teams per high school can participate. Questions are chosen from a wide range of topics - movies, current events, literature, science, television, geography, mathematics, history, sports. etc. Every fifth question is longer and requires analytical or conceptual reasoning. ($40 registration fee per team due by October 10, 2003) Prizes: Named scholarships and internships and souvenir gifts.
Poetry Contest/Awards and Readings Ceremony - April 8, 2004
Registered Illinois high school students are encouraged to enter this FREE contest that will allow them to showcase their writing talents. The purpose of this contest is to recognize and encourage young poets. Entries must be postmarked by January 23, 2004.Prizes: Cash prizes, autographed books of poetry, and souvenir gifts.
Posters with more info are hanging in the Teen Cafe Read.

Read For A Life Time
Read for a Lifetime is the only statewide reading program targeting high school students. The primary goal of the program is to promote the enjoyment of reading, by encouraging students to read both classic and contemporary literature, and rewarding them for their effort. Hopefully by participating in Read for a Lifetime, students will develop a love of books and reading that will last a lifetime.
To date, 4862 students from more than 100 high schools throughout Illinois have received certificates of achievement for participating in Read for a Lifetime. More than a dozen seniors have received special recognition for having completed the program requirements during all four years of high school.
Illinois high schools participating in the program receive a list of 25 book titles. The list represents a mixture of classic and contemporary literature. Each student who receives a certificate of achievement sign by Secretary of State Jesse White, along with a discount coupon from Read for a Lifetime co-sponsor, Waldenbooks.
